THCP, THC-H and THC-B are three cannabinoids that look like Delta-9 THC with one change: a longer or shorter side chain. THC-B has a four-carbon chain, THC has five, THC-H has six and THCP has seven. The plant makes all three only in trace amounts, so commercial lots are usually made by converting hemp-derived CBD. That origin matters for Section 781 of P.L. 119-37, which takes effect December 11, 2026 and rewrites what counts as hemp. This guide explains what each compound is, how it is made and what buyers should check before stocking it. Buyers who carry THC-P products will find the sourcing and COA points below most useful.
| Compound | Side chain | Full name | Natural abundance |
|---|---|---|---|
| THC-B | 4 carbons (butyl) | Tetrahydrocannabutol | Trace amounts |
| Delta-9 THC (reference) | 5 carbons (pentyl) | Tetrahydrocannabinol | Main THC form in the plant |
| THC-H | 6 carbons (hexyl) | Tetrahydrocannabihexol | Trace amounts |
| THCP | 7 carbons (heptyl) | Tetrahydrocannabiphorol | Trace amounts |
What Are THCP, THC-H and THC-B?
All three are homologues of Delta-9 THC. A homologue is a molecule with the same core structure and a side chain that differs by one or more carbon atoms. The core is identical in each case; only the length of the alkyl chain changes, and the letter in the name tells you which chain it is: B for butyl, H for hexyl and P for the heptyl chain of the phorol family.
- THCP was reported in 2019 by an Italian research group that found it in a medicinal cannabis variety while studying the plant's minor compounds. The paper is listed in the sources below.
- THC-B was described by the same group shortly afterward, also from a medicinal cannabis variety.
- THC-H was identified later as the six-carbon member of the same series.
Published research on all three is still early, and Bulk CBD Distributors makes no claims about how any of them affects people. What a buyer needs to know is the chemistry, the sourcing and the law.
How Are They Made?
The hemp plant builds these compounds in very small quantities, far too little to extract at scale. Commercial THCP, THC-H and THC-B are therefore made by taking CBD and its relatives through a conversion and refining process, then distilling the result into an oil or a distillate. They are not a single, standard product: purity, residual solvents and leftover reaction by-products can vary a lot from one lot to the next, which is why the batch COA carries so much weight.
If you sell finished goods, the form your supplier delivers decides the next step. Distillates go into vape hardware and infused products, and some brands use the compound to fortify flower, which is how THCP flower is produced.
How to Read the COA for a THCP, THC-H or THC-B Lot
A certificate of analysis for these compounds should do more than show one big number. Check:
- That the lab tested for the compound by name. Not every lab method separates THCP from Delta-9 THC, so ask whether the method was validated for it.
- Total THC and Delta-9 THC as separate lines, since both feed compliance math. Our total THC calculation guide shows the formula.
- Residual solvents, heavy metals and pesticides, because a converted oil carries more process risk than plant material.
- Lab accreditation. Look for an ISO 17025-accredited third-party lab and a report that matches the batch number on your container.
The hemp COA reading guide walks through the full report layout, and the COA library shows representative reports; the batch COA is always sent with the order.
Pro Tip: Ask every supplier of these compounds for the method sheet, not just the COA. If the lab cannot say how it separates THCP from Delta-9 THC, the headline number is hard to trust.
What Does Section 781 Do to THCP, THC-H and THC-B?
Section 781 of P.L. 119-37 redefines hemp. P.L. 119-103, signed September 3, 2026, moved the effective date to December 11, 2026. Two parts of the law matter here:
- A narrower hemp definition. It excludes cannabinoids that are not capable of being naturally produced by the plant, and cannabinoids that are made by synthesis or manufactured outside the plant.
- A limit on finished products. Finished hemp products are capped at 0.4 mg of total THC per container.
Because commercial THCP, THC-H and THC-B come from conversion, a lot made that way is the kind of product the first point is aimed at, even though the plant can make trace amounts of each. How regulators apply that wording to a trace-natural cannabinoid made by conversion is a legal question, not a chemistry one, and this guide does not answer it. Buyers should plan as if these compounds are at risk after December 11, 2026, and talk to a lawyer before building a long-term line around them.
Compliance Note: This guide is general information and not legal advice. State rules differ, and some states already restrict these compounds. Check the state where each product will be sold.
What This Means for Your Business
- Treat inventory as time-limited. Plan sell-through before December 11, 2026 rather than assuming sales continue after it.
- Buy only lots with a COA that names the compound and reports Delta-9 and total THC separately.
- Keep paperwork by batch, so you can show a lot's source and test results to a retailer or regulator.
- Diversify. Our THCA and Delta 8 ranges face the same change, so a buyer's map of which cannabinoids stay legal is worth building now; the THCA and Section 781 guide and the 2026 hemp law guide cover the timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is THCP?
THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is a cannabinoid that matches Delta-9 THC except for a seven-carbon side chain in place of five.
What is THC-H?
THC-H (tetrahydrocannabihexol) is the six-carbon member of the same series, with one more carbon than Delta-9 THC.
What is THC-B?
THC-B (tetrahydrocannabutol) is the four-carbon member, with one fewer carbon than Delta-9 THC.
Are THCP, THC-H and THC-B natural?
The plant makes each in trace amounts. Commercial supply is usually made by converting CBD, not extracted from the plant.
Are THCP, THC-H and THC-B legal after December 11, 2026?
Section 781 narrows the hemp definition to exclude cannabinoids made by synthesis or manufactured outside the plant. How that applies to converted THCP, THC-H and THC-B is a legal question; plan for risk and get legal advice.
Does a COA show THCP separately from Delta-9 THC?
Only if the lab's method was validated to separate them. Ask for the method sheet along with the COA.
How is THCP sold in bulk?
Mostly as distillate and as an addition to flower. Each form has its own COA and potency range.
What does Section 781 do to total THC limits?
From December 11, 2026, finished hemp products are limited to 0.4 mg of total THC per container.
